Kurt Steinhaus was confirmed as the State of New Mexico Secretary of Public Education on February 22, 2022. Prior to his state appointment, Steinhaus was the Superintendent of the Los Alamos (NM) Public Schools. Steinhaus stepped down as Director, Community Programs Office, Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2015 after serving 17 years at the Lab where he ran an organization of over 200 people that connected the Lab with New Mexico communities, ensuring positive impact on the region’s economy, environment, educational system, and quality of life. 2005-2007, on special appointment, Steinhaus served as New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson’s Education Policy Advisor. He also has served as Deputy Cabinet Secretary New Mexico Department of Education, as President of the International Society for Education and Technology (ISTE), was the State Director of Educational Technology, New Mexico Department of Education, and Assistant Superintendent for Accountability and Information Services.
